Record companies are in dire straits, record sales have dropped to an all-time low. In their struggle to survive the record companies put the blame on ‘illegal music downloads’ on the internet. In an attempt to stop online music sharing the record companies have joined forces in an organization called RIAA. The RIAA is an organization that tries to scare the shit out of people by prosecuting them for copyright violations or offer the possibility to settle out of court. Most people don’t want to go through all the legal hassle and settle. Are the record companies on the right track?
Just a quick note to recommend the Wordpress software that drives this blog. Yesterday a new version was released (2.3.2) that contains some security & bug fixes and other minor updates. Deployment of the new version is a breeze. Installing the update was a breeze. Just unpack the distribution over the existing tree and there you go. Very smooth. So if you are looking for blog software please take a look at Wordpress and I think you’ll like it as much as I do.
The only thing I had to tweak was to reapply a little change I made to one of the core widgets (calendar). That is ofcourse my problem not wordpresses’, since I like to tweak the code a little every now and then.
Uit een eerdere post waarin een hert een jager aan puin trapt hebben veel mensen de conclusie getrokken dat ik mordicus tegen de jacht ben. Dat beeld moet een beetje genuanceerd worden. Het is namelijk zo dat ik in het bijzonder tegen de plezier jacht ben en dan bedoel ik niet het drijvende vermaak van duizenden Nederlanders die bij mooi weer het ruime sop kiezen. Dan doel ik op de honderden zoniet duizenden mensen die gewapend met verrekijker en geweer de natuur in trekken om op wild te schieten omdat ze het leuk vinden.

I’ve been screaming from the top of my lungs for years: why do companies accept proprietary fileformats? Why do they accept a vendor lock-in for something as basic as your own data? I’ve seen many clients trying to keep up a heterogeneous computing environment just to prevent a vendor lock-in. Good thing but on the other hand all documentation, financial information, reports etc. are all in a proprietary format without anybody caring. I really don’t understand why you want your own data being held for ransom in some purposely undocumented fileformat. Fileformats are considered trade secrets by manufacturers, but should be regarded as a noose around your neck.
Some time ago I linked to a series of articles about privacy concerns written by my good buddy Karel Kubat. Really good stuff to read. As news got out new articles were added to an impressive six in total. Now there’s material to add another article. The Washington Post has a piece about the preparations of the FBI to setup a vast database of biometric data. This is meant for people from the USA as well as foreigners. In other words: all of us.

Ik schreef er al eerder over maar morgen valt definitief het doek voor Martin Ros als boeken recensent bij Tros Nieuwsshow. Inmiddels is ook het nieuws uitgelekt omtrent opvolging van Martin Ros. Het is veelzeggend dat men niet minder dan vier verschillende personen het werk laat doen dat Martin zo geweldig in z’n ééntje afkon. Ah wel. We zien het in meer takken van de dienstverlening gebeuren: één capabele medewerker vervangen door vier medewerkers waarvan het gecombineerde IQ gelijk is aan dat van een doperwt, wel goedkoper. Dat dan weer wel.
Okay, I really can’t help this. I’m sorry. It’s just that, to me, it’s not Christmas when I didn’t get to hear the following German Christmas song. It’s really an evergreen in Germany. Every year Rolf Zuckowski performs this song on German television. I really think Rolf Zuckowski can make a living out of this song just as Alice Cooper can with his summer classic “school’s out”. Anyway. If you don’t like this song don’t worry, it’s not you, it’s me. I know it is cheesy, the children are irritating and all… still I need to hear this every year. Just to resynchronize my internal clock.
Now this gets me all excited. I’m a big PacMan fan. The best game ever. Well, I like Ms. PacMan better. Anyway, this has to be the ultimate Christmas decoration as far as I’m concerned. Wish I had this baby right here in my front yard. Oh no, if I could have one wish, make that an original PacMan cabinet right here in my livingroom…. ah anyway. Enjoy the video.
Geboren en getogen in ‘t Zandt en ik ben er trots op. Een kleine vlek op de kaart van Nederland, vallend onder de gemeente Loppersum. Er wonen nog geen duizend mensen in mijn dorp. Het is een hechte gemeenschap waar iedereen elkaar kent, ‘ons kent ons’, en waar je niets kunt doen zonder dat een ander het ziet. Hier wordt het leven geleefd als op oude ansichtkaarten. ‘T Zandt is een stille gemeente waar geen buitenstaander zich van bewust is. Tot afgelopen augustus, toen we groots in het nieuws zijn gekomen. Waar normaal gesproken het jongen van kalveren het grootste nieuws is hebben we nu te maken met een heuse brandstichter.
