I’ve written about global warming before and I’m not convinced that we face disaster as we are led to believe. For those who roam this earth for more than three decades know that every seven or eight years we have a new collective enemy that will wipe us from the face of the earth. We’ve been told that we would sufficate because of all the trees and forrest being destroyed. Nothing have changed since then and we still breath don’t we? Same goes for the Ozon layer. We would all have been melted by now remember? I still feel pretty solid. Many more examples of global annihilation are there. The newest is the global warming. I don’t know about you but as far as the weather is concerned we had a terrible summer. It’s currently freezing in the Netherlands. Global warming? Bring it on! I’m currently burning enormous amounts of organic fuel just to keep me from freezing. A little global warming would be very welcome at the moment. The global war on global warming was declared some time ago in Bali where the world leaders attended a conference regarding the reduction of CO2 exhaust. You and I know that this is an empty shell but our Dutch representative claims victory. How naive.

Schande natuurlijk!

One of the most anticipated applications of computers has been automated translation. If computers could translate any language to another we would have better communication. Better communication means less misunderstandings, less misunderstandings means less conflicts. So since the old days of computing people have tried to implement the ultimate translator. There are many handheld devices that are capable of translating from and to a limited number of languages. In the current web age we use translators to translate foreign sites to one of the languages we are fluent in. Examples are Yahoo’s Babelfish and more recently Google’s Translate. Now some countries have multiple languages. If you only know one of the languages used you can use machine translation to provide all translations. Sometimes this goes horribly wrong, check the wonderful pictures that illustrate the article.

This is a hilarious phone prank to scare the shit out of a telemarketeer. The telemarkteer is told he just called a murder scene. This is a rather old one, I heard the audio only version months ago. Now this version has a transscript of what is being said. This is really hilarious. Even if it is staged it still is a beautiful conversation.

Hooray. Finally some positive news about the dutch government: it has decided that open standards and open source software should be used. Using propriety software and formats is still allowed but has to be justified. I never understood why people allow their documents to be stored in some propriety format. It’s my data so I should have unlimited access to it.
It’s a good thing the government made this decision. It really don’t understand why large corporations still use propriety, closed software. Isn’t it weird that the your information required to do business is stored in a format that you don’t have access to except by using a specific piece of software? Doesn’t it feel like your information is being held for ransom? “Buy the license or your data is gone”.
The deadline on using the open document format is set on April 2008 for state government organization. The local government organizations have a deadline of 2009.
Here’s some stuff to read.

Daar. Op dat moment.

Here’s a very funny video I got from Joëlle. I definitely could use a monkey like that. You’ll have to go to the continuation of this post to see the movie. I got complaints that Internet Explorer crashed badly with earlier posts that had the movie on the frontpage. So at least your browser won’t die by just visiting the main page of the blog. Thank MicroSucks for that.

Here are some excellent photographs from Matt Stuart which kind of represents the spirit of his other work. Great photographs with a very subtle contrast between subject and environment. Check out his other work on his own website.

Hi, I’m back from a trip to Paris. The training was very useful, the stay was very pleasant et les Mademoiselles sont tres belle. The weather was fair as well but it was dark when we left the hotel in the morning and it was dark when we left the training center at night. I took this trip together with two contractors who will be working on the same project as I do, Sachin and Ashok from India. We enjoyed the four days in Paris. Thursday was the last day of the training. In the afternoon we were supposed to be at the “Gare du Nord” train station at 16:55 to head back to Amsterdam.
