Dutch claim victory in Bali

I’ve written about global warming before and I’m not convinced that we face disaster as we are led to believe. For those who roam this earth for more than three decades know that every seven or eight years we have a new collective enemy that will wipe us from the face of the earth. We’ve been told that we would sufficate because of all the trees and forrest being destroyed. Nothing have changed since then and we still breath don’t we? Same goes for the Ozon layer. We would all have been melted by now remember? I still feel pretty solid. Many more examples of global annihilation are there. The newest is the global warming. I don’t know about you but as far as the weather is concerned we had a terrible summer. It’s currently freezing in the Netherlands. Global warming? Bring it on! I’m currently burning enormous amounts of organic fuel just to keep me from freezing. A little global warming would be very welcome at the moment. The global war on global warming was declared some time ago in Bali where the world leaders attended a conference regarding the reduction of CO2 exhaust. You and I know that this is an empty shell but our Dutch representative claims victory. How naive.

The Dutch representative, Jacqueline Cramer, blogged the event. It’s a good read for people who understand dutch. It shows how she has experienced the conference. Really amusing. She’s very naive. She is not used to this kind of negotiations. She takes it all in as it comes not even noticing all the political games going on behind her back. At one point in time Al Gore tried to convince the world leaders to finalize the agreement without the support of the United States. Now this is a brilliant move by Gore. Gore criticized the USA for not cooperating and tried to convince the rest of the world to go ahead without the USA. Now that’s great politics. Gore helps the USA to prevent massive investments in reduction technology. Meanwhile he tries to urge the rest of the world to go ahead. It really shows what Gore is made of.

Needless to say that the developing countries opposed strongly against that. Why should the relative poor countries have to invest heavily in reduction technology while rich countries like the USA get off the hook? The tactics of Al Gore clearly backfired on him. He hoped by putting some blame and shame on the USA he could convince all other countries to just go along without the USA. Most of the representatives had their eyes open and saw what was happening. Our Dutch representative clearly had no clue. She never really understood what Gore was trying to do. I really didn’t expect that from here anyway. She’s too naive for this kind negotiations. She’s like a little girl in the playground admiring all the grown up boys talking loudly. It is really a waste to get Jacqueline Cramer to Bali. Think of all the CO2 she produced to get to Bali. Nobody even knew who she was or what she was doing there.

Apparently she also is the only one who claims victory in Bali. While the rest of the world realizes that nothing has been accomplished she still thinks that a lot of progress has been made. She really likes how the USA finally agreed on the resolution of the conference. The USA only did that because it doesn’t contain any concrete targets. She applauded the USA for a long time. Now when you look at the resolution you will see that we basically agree to disagree. No concrete steps have been defined. There is only an agreement that says that we should agree on something before 2009. Hooray! Victory! The world is saved. Once again. Thanks to Jacqueline Cramer.

Probably Jacqueline Cramer was the only person who could point Bali on a map or globe.. (and for the american readers here, Bali is NOT the capital of Copenhagen)
