Ik durf er niet meer over te beginnen maar het gaat weer over dubieuze toekenning van subsidies en, je zou bijna zeggen “uiteraard”, de PvdA. In die partij, die juist voor de ‘gewone man’ op zegt te komen, blijken de meesters van het graaien uit de pot met gratis belastinggeld te zetelen. Ze kunnen de naam beter veranderen in “Pikken van de Arbeiders” dan weet je tenminste waar je aan toe bent als PvdA kiezer. Noem het “een stukje transparantie naar de kiezer toe” of noem het tuig van de richel. Dit is nu het zoveelste schandaal dat we meemaken van dit nog jonge kabinet. Waarom pikken we dit eigenlijk nog langer? We kunnen een sterk signaal afgeven door massaal één jaar geen belasting te betalen. Burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid uit protest tegen de schandelijke omgang met publieke middelen door de dames en heren politici. Helaas plundert de fiscus al maandelijks het bruto-salaris van werknemers zodat het merendeel van de verschuldigde belasting reeds in het bezit van de overheid is.

How’s that for a lucky bastard. Yesterday I got my brand new Apple MacBook Pro to replace my somewhat aged, but still well functioning Dell Inspiron 9100. My employer got me the 17″ version with the high resolution screen (1920 by 1200). It has plenty of memory (4GB) which might come in handy for all my virtualization needs. This is my first Mac and already I’m loving it to death.

First of all the hardware. This is such an elegant machine. I used a Dell inspiron 9100 which has a height of 5 cm. People always thought the Dell came with a builtin docking station. I’ve had my share of mockery but the Dell was fast with a desktop Pentium4 3.2 Ghz. Now this Mac is from another planet. It’s height is only around 1.5 cm. Sure it is bigger since it is a 17″ machine but it is all pixels, baby, just what I need.

“Na het zuur komt het zoet”. Het zou een uitspraak kunnen zijn van een druiventeler die zijn druiven aan een inspectie onderwerpt maar het is de uitspraak van een druif. Deze druif beloofde u en mij betere tijden nadat we door de zure appel hadden gebeten. U en ik wachten nog steeds op dat beloofde zoet. Voorlopig smaken de toegeworpen beenderen steeds zuurder. Al sinds de invoering van de euro vreet het zuur aan ons.

De horeca is bijkans onbetaalbaar geworden dus mensen mijden aankopen in horeca gelegenheden. Jongeren verzamelen zich voor het uitgaan in geimproviseerde keten en jeugdhonken en gaan in-drinken met goedkoop bier. Per krat uit de supermarkt voor een fractie van de horecaprijzen. En nu klaagt de horeca. Nu gaat het ineens slecht met ze. Zielig hoor. Eerst de prijs van een biertje naar belachelijke hoogte stuwen en nu klagen dat mensen het vertikken om de belachelijk hoge prijzen te accepteren. Sorry maar daar kan ik geen medelijden mee hebben. Jullie hebben het zelf verknald met je “drie euro voor een biertje”.

Postieve opwinding op het binnenhof. Gisteren is het jongste kamerlid ooit geïnstalleerd in de tweede kamer. De nèt twintig jarige Farshad Bashir nestelt zich op het pluche namens de SP. De trotse Jan Marijnissen heeft een interview met “het eerste lid van de Tweede Kamer van Afghaanse origine” op zijn weblog geplaatst. Deze installatie moet natuurlijk vooral feestelijk en vrolijk zijn om de problemen binnen de SP te verdoezelen.

In het interview verklaart Farshad dat hij nooit de ambitie heeft gehad om in de tweede kamer te gaan zitten. Maar toch ook weer wel. Dat typeert de antwoorden van Farshad. Hij spreekt veel, snel èn zichzelf tegen. Het zijn antwoorden in de geest van “Groen is lelijk. Geel is mooi want de zon is geel. Maar groen is ook mooi”. Wat is het nu? Ik hou van duidelijkheid, maar besef dat de kwaliteit om tegenovergestelde standpunten in één betoog te stoppen een politieke kwaliteit is die, zeker bij de SP, bijzonder gewaardeerd zal worden. Farshad weet ook al precies hoe het bij de SP werkt. In het interview met Marijnissen zegt Farshad dat hij weet wat er van hem verwacht wordt: “dat je de standpunten van de SP moet kunnen verwoorden”. Jan bepaalt de standpunten en de rest praat hem na maar ieder naar de eigen doelgroep binnen de achterban van de SP. Veel ruimte voor eigen inbreng lijkt er niet te zijn.

Hoera, hij is binnen gekomen. Gisteren eigenlijk al maar ik was te blij om daar gisteren al melding van te maken. En ik heb reden tot vreugde. Want wat is er nu fijner voor de hardwerkende mensch dan een groot deel van je bij elkaar geploeterde centjes in het grote zwarte gat van de overheid te donderen? Ieder jaar weer verheug ik me erop om mijn muntjes op de bodem te horen vallen maar ieder jaar blijft dat uit. Het lijkt wel een bodemloze put waar ik het in stort.

Maar geen geklaag. Vooral geen geklaag. De uitnodiging is feestelijk getooid in een hemelsblauwe envelope. Met een lichte tinteling en laat ik het maar gewoon eerlijk zeggen, met een licht erotische opwinding, scheur ik de envelope open. Snel lezen en dan feesten. De uitnodiging tot aangifte over 2007 is binnen. Na de speelse web statistieken krijgen we dan nu de echte keiharde cijfers over 2007. Dat wordt betalen. Maar ik klaag niet. Ik ben blij. De tijdige afhandeling. De uiterst succesvolle overstap naar het handige DigID. De verdomd geestige spotjes op TV. Nee, van mij geen kwaad woord over de belastingdienst. Je weet immers maar nooit. Nu ben ik niet meteen bang voor een ‘redactiezuivering’ maar ik wil niet met in beton gegoten voeten in het IJ belanden of volgend jaar ineens twee aanslagen krijgen. Derhalve: driewerf ‘hoezee’ voor de belastingdienst. Hoezee! Hoezee! Hoezee! Heeft iemand een luchtverfrisser bij de hand?

Ach. Het moet er dan toch maar van komen. Ik wilde eigenlijk het geval Eveline Herfkens (oud-minister) niet apart noemen als het zoveelste bewijs van de laakbare ethiek van onze landsbestuurders. Maar als het verweer tegen de aantijgingen slechts uit arrogant, minachtend en grootheidswaanzinnig gebrabbel bestaat dan vraag je er wel een beetje om. Hoe kun je zo’n geval nu niet eens heerlijk in het zonnetje zetten. Dit alles natuurlijk weer in het vertrouwde kader “Nederland bananenrepubliek”. En arrogantie schijnt nu eenmaal erg goed te smaken met een banaantje. Lees dit artikel maar eens. Mevrouw moest wel financiële hulp accepteren uit het vaderland anders had mevrouw misschien wel uitzicht gehad op een blinde muur en niet eens business-class kunnen vliegen! Erg he?

Oh now this comes as a surprise. According to this article there are problems with the Diebold ballot scan systems used in New Hampshire. Earlier I wrote about the recount in New Hamsphire and now it appears that the machines can’t be trusted. Now what have we learned? Probably nothing. Nothing to see here, move along…

My good friend Karel Kubat is the author of Crossroads, a very fast, stable and reliable software loadbalancer. It does everything you might expect from a software load balancer / failover utility for TCP based services. Crossroads is a fully open source GPL project. More and more large organisations are using Crossroads for all their balancing needs. Crossroads is really well optimized and uses as little resources as possible. Even the option parser is a separate binary that just loads a binary version of the configuration into the daemon. Crossroads comes with a separate web frontend for management.

Although Crossroads primarily balances network load you can also use it for other purposes. For instance if you have to connect your computer to many different network setups Crossroads can help you out. If you visit many clients or offices with different network setups Crossroads can hide the differences. For example the HTTP proxy. You just define a local HTTP proxy in Crossroads. This is the proxy you configure in your browser. In Crossroads you can define multiple backends for that local HTTP proxy. For each office or location you define backend(s). Now just plugin your computer in the network and Crossroads will connect to the first HTTP proxy it finds. You don’t have to reconfigure your browser anymore no matter in what office you are. It just always works. You can do this for other TCP network services as well.

Met zijn zware, rauwe stem mompelt Chet een nauwelijks hoorbare vloek terwijl hij met beide handen de kraag van zijn lange lederen jas opsteekt met de bedoeling zijn hoofd bescherming te bieden tegen de regen en de tering-kou die de stad al de hele nacht in een wurggreep houdt. Chet is een acht-en-dertig jarige beroepsmilitair, nèt een week terug van één van de vele buitenlandse missies van de afgelopen tijd. Zijn heze stem klinkt opmerkelijk ouder dan je zou verwachten.

Oh no. My favorite linux distro, Gentoo, seems to be in turmoil. The server that hosts this blog runs Gentoo. In a blog entry written by Daniel Robbins (the creator of Gentoo Linux) he writes about the unfortunate news that the Gentoo Foundation’s charter has been revoked for several weeks, which basically means that as of this moment the Gentoo Foundation no longer exists. You will not find a trace of this on the official Gentoo website.

Daniel left the Gentoo project but can’t watch from the sideline how things get worse. He ends the blog entry with some positive news that he is going to offer to clean up the mess under certain conditions. The offer is now also online and you can find it here. Daniel states that a lot will have to change. Daniel is willing to clean up the mess under certain conditions. He wants all trustees to accept his leadership and the trustees he appoints. So he needs some kind of totalitarian regime to clean up the mess in an acceptable time. I normally do not support or sympathize with totalitarian regimes as absolute power corrupts, but in this case: Go Daniel! Go! Get in and save one of the best Linux (meta-) distributions out there.

Pre-elections in the USA, democrats and republicans are voting what candidate should run for president. Currently we are just in the stage of pre-elections and already the angry mobs are prowling the streets shouting out for a recount. Now that’s what I love about the elections in the USA. Count and recount, where is my pocket calculator?

The big difference between the paper votes and the machine votes in New Hampshire give raise to doubt against the voting machines. Are they manipulated? In Holland we already have a movement against voting machines. Or can it be that the areas that have to resort to paper voting have a typical bias towards a certain candidate? That is actually the big question. The voting machines used in New Hampshire are actually just scanners that automatically count the ballots marked by the voter. So a manual recount is possible. The recount is going to happen since most candidates, democrats and republicans, are picking up the rumors heard around the states and the internet. More info on the recount can be found here in this Wired article. Looking forward to this. I’m very curious if the recount yields the same results.

Now I like a good screensaver and phosphor (written by Jamie Zawinski) is one of them. Phosphor emulates an old green monochrome terminal screen with a very long afterglow (due to the phosphor). Phosphor can be used in many ways. You can configure it to get its output from a file, URL or from a program. It can even emulate a VT100 so you can use terminal control characters. You could recreate some visicalc screens and old stuff like that, whatever keeps you ticking.

Now Jason Kress thought that it might be cool to display random Linux kernel source files using the phosphor screensaver and I like that. Jason created a small C-program to select a random file from all .c files found using the find command. I don’t like the fact that find has run to completion before a file is selected. Please keep in mind that the linux kernel has well over 9000 .c files. When I start my screensaver I’m taking a break. Possibly because my computer is compiling. I don’t want the screensaver hamper my compilation with a heavy find command on the disk.

Beschouw het als een late nieuwjaarsreceptie of luiheid mijnerzijds, desalniettemin: na het openen van een paar flessen bubbels is het tijd voor de stats van BloggEd! in 2007. Mijn dank en de bubbels gaan uit naar de trouwe bezoekers/lezers van mijn blog.

Helaas zijn er geen nauwkeurige cijfers van begin november, beetje te gretige logrotatie gehanteerd Gelukkig zijn de Google Webmasters Tools en Google AdSense je vrienden in bange tijden dus via die weg is er een redelijk, jedoch niet volledig, overzicht te krijgen.

Now here is some good and bad news for all diet coke junks out there. If you’re like me you practically live on diet coke. First the good news: a major brand is starting an awareness program for women’s heart disease. In conjunction with the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s “The Heart Truth” campaign the logo’s will appear 2.5 billion diet coke products. Here’s a link to a nice article announcing the initiative.

The bad news? According to this article soda’s (diet soda’s included) increase the risk of… , you guessed it, heart disease. So let’s pop open another one and enjoy another sugar free, free heart disease. Cheers!

De burgemeester van Purmerend doet een gooi naar een hoger ambt: burgemeester van Eindhoven. Dan ga je toch mooi van een provinciestadje met 80.000 inwoners naar een metropool met 210.860 inwoners (1 januari 2007). Vandaag is de campagne in alle hevigheid losgebarsten. Naar ouderwets Utrechts recept valt er voor de Eindhovenaren slechts te kiezen uit twee PvdA mannetjes, strootjes trekken met twee even korte strootjes zeg maar. Welke je ook kiest: je verliest altijd.
