Burgemeester Cohen van Amsterdam kreeg vandaag het rapport “recidivemeting trajecten aanpak en preventie jeugdcriminaliteit” uitgereikt. Dat was een bittere teleurstelling. De jonge crimineeltjes die door Cohen altijd zo lieflijk gepamperd en geknuffeld worden blijken keiharde recidivisten. Ontgoocheling alom natuurlijk. Het moet als een dolksteek in de rug aankomen. Cohen heeft deze groep criminelen altijd de hand boven het hoofd gehouden, liters thee met ze gedronken, gesmeekt om zich te gedragen maar het blijkt niet te werken. Dat is raar want Cohen wist altijd zeker dat de zachte aanpak zou gaan werken. Voorstanders van een hardere aanpak werden door hem dan ook categorisch voor ‘populisten’ uitgemaakt.

Maar de dolk is niet alleen in zijn rug geplant maar ook nog een paar keer rond gedraaid want Cohen heeft het nu helemaal gehad. Vandaag riep hij zowaar dat er nu toch maar eens misschien een hardere aanpak geprobeerd moet gaan worden. Oh jee, de duizelige draaideur criminelen moeten nu echt op gaan passen. Als Cohen straks weer thee met ze gaat drinken neemt hij misschien geen koekjes meer mee. Dat is de harde aanpak en dat zal ze leren…

Het is voorbij vrienden. De mooie dagen zijn over. Waren we al afgegleden naar bananenrepubliek en hard op weg om een politiestaat te worden, het kan altijd nog erger. Vandaag kwam het CDA, bij monde van fractievoorzitter Van Geel, met een oproep aan Wilders om zijn vermeend staatsgevaarlijke “moslim film” niet uit te zenden… U hoort het goed. Het CDA roept Wilders op om een film waarvan de inhoud onbekend is niet uit te zenden…

TNS Nipo heeft een onderzoek gedaan (onder 1246 Nederlanders maar liefst) naar het belang van en de bekendheid met de grondwet. Tegenvallend resultaat. Het merendeel (94%) kon nog net, naar goed overheidsvoorbeeld, een slogan ophoesten in de geest van “grondwet: best belangrijk”. Het was gissen naar de inhoud ervan.

Maar treur niet Nederlands volk, nog niet alles is verloren want we hebben Guusje ter Horst. Guusje is niet zo achterlijk als ze eruit ziet… want als niemand weet wat er in de grondwet staat dan kun je het dus geheel naar eigen inzicht en politieke agenda aanpassen. De onbekendheid met de inhoud van de grondwet is daarvoor een mooie aanleiding. Guusje haastte zich dus met een plannetje om een nieuwe versie van de grondwet te maken. Guusje gaat de grondwet ‘flitsender’ maken. Het moet aanspreken en lekker bekken zodat helden als Lange Frans en Ali B. de grondwet lekker kunnen rappen op een vette beat. Gaanderweg pakt ze meteen een aantal artikeltjes grondig aan zodat een aantal vervelende vrijheden zoals de vrijheid van meningsuiting en publicatie beperkt worden…

Today I saw a BSOD in “Dumpert” on Geenstijl (dutch). It’s a photo of a coffee machine that shows a huge “blue screen of death”. Now I wonder what a coffee machine is doing with a screen like that and why the hell it runs windows. The story doesn’t tell if the machine is still capable of serving coffee. The machine actually looks a lot like some coffee machines I’ve seen elsewhere but without the huge screen. These are from Maas International. So I checked out the website and this is the SL1000. It has several options and extra’s and one of them is a 24” LCD flatscreen and DVD player. Here are the specs (pdf/dutch). I still don’t know why the SL1000 needs windows anyway? Is the DVD player windows based? Is this a customized machine?

De politiebond ACP verwerpt het bod van Guusje Ter Horst. Het is voorbij met de vriendelijke “Oom Agent”. Keiharde pegels willen ze zien. Hoewel, ik denk stiekem dat ze het toch om een andere reden verwerpen, althans dat zou ik doen. Ik zou wel eens willen kijken hoe sterk Ter Horst werkelijk in haar schoenen staat. Ze heeft wel een grote waffel over ‘uiterste bod’ maar hoe ver gaat ze werkelijk? Gewoon een beetje uitproberen, een beetje spelen. Eens kijken hoe gek je haar kunt krijgen. Uiteindelijk zal er toch wel een commissie komen om de impasse te doorbreken. De commissie zal in het midden uitkomen en een bindende uitspraak doen maar tot die tijd kun je toch even lekker het bloed onder de nagels van Guusje vandaan zuigen.

Het is algemeen bekend dat agenten (op straat) ondankbaar en soms gevaarlijk werk hebben. Daar mag best een goede beloning tegenover staan. Behalve voor die twee sukkels die me vanuit een autootje in de berm geflitst hebben met 55 km/u waar 50 is toegestaan. €20 boete voor een flut-overtreding. Ga toch wat zinnigs doen man, ga staken!

Een tijdje geleden ontstond er commotie over het project “Goud”. De Nederlandse overheid had zojuist verklaard om meer open standaarden te gaan gebruiken toen boven water kwam dat Wouter Bos een vette deal aan Microsoft heeft gegund. Dit is mogelijk doordat de aanbesteding volledig richting Microsoft en Microsoft standaarden geschreven is. Bos haastte zich te melden dat “Goud” slechts tijdelijk is en in 2012 vervangen wordt door een andere “desktop”.  Hij heeft de toezegging gedaan om deze aanbesteding nog eens tegen het licht te houden.

Vandaag komt dan het hoge woord eruit in een publicatie van het Ministerie van Financiën. Conclusie Goud: voortvarend doorgaan.

Ik citeer: “GOUD is een ferme stap in de goede richting. Dat concluderen minister Bos en staatssecretaris Frank Heemskerk (EZ) na heroverweging van het project.”

Like they have nothing better to do: U.S. spies are now developing software to detect extremists in our peaceful world of warcraft. The ultimate goal of project Reynard is “automatically detecting suspicious behavior and actions in the virtual world”. This is all about data-mining. Hans Reiser (of ReiserFS fame) is still on trial. We’ve seen some dramatic witness testimonies already. Now the mother of the disappeared Nina Reiser and the father of Hans Reiser took the stand. This trial and the testimonies of the witnesses are becoming a freak show. Read the part about the father explaining that he (just like Hans) removes seats from his car when they malfunction instead of replacing them. There’s a whole lot of bizarro stuff going on. Threat Level is still writing up reports as the trial continues.

All who witnessed the birth of the world wide web will remember the good old Netscape Navigator browser. For the young people: that was before Microsoft Internet Explorer and before Al Gore claimed he invented the internet. Oh well… Netscape Navigator 9.0.0.6 is the last version that AOL will release. The end-of-life version of Navigator will prompt users to switch to Firefox or Flock. R.I.P. Netscape Navigator.

Sigh, yesterday was one of those days on which Microsoft tells the world it wants to open up. Steve Ballmer announced a new initiative to open up Microsoft products for better interoperability with competing products and technologies. This is hard to believe because the traditional business model of Microsoft has been “vendor lock-in”. Encrypting your data in a proprietary format without telling you how to access that is not helping clients but holding their data for ransom (licenses). Will Microsoft really change it ways now?…

A couple of days ago I posted a small guide to use encrypted disk images in Mac OS X instead of Apple’s FileVault feature. Disk encryption is the solution to store your data in a secure manner… I thought. You won’t believe this but a group of researchers developed an attack against disk encryption software. The problem is that the secret you have to enter to decrypt the data is stored in RAM (obviously). When you turn off your computer the data in RAM will fade. This will take seconds to minutes. The researchers have developed a small tool to capture the RAM contents to disk and hunt down the secret used to encrypt the data…

It was years ago when friends (co-workers) got me hooked on StarCraft. On Saturdays we met at someone’s place to play StarCraft. Many hours of fun trying to wipe each other of the map, literally. StarCraft is all about building your army, defending your base and trying to wreak havoc on someone else’s base. All in all nothing but good memories. Well except for the fact that we had to wait for hours on Patrick to get his system up and running… sigh…

Blizzard supplies a PC version as well as a Mac version on the CDs. On one of the Game-a-lot meetings Randolf showed up with a Mac notebook (OS 9) running StarCraft. So I thought let’s try to install StarCraft on my MacBook Pro on Mac OS X. On the Blizzard support site I found a native OS X installer so you don’t have to cope with the Mac OS 9 backwards compatibility issues. So I downloaded the installer and started it. It allowed me to install StarCraft as well as the expansion pack Brood War from the original CDs. Worked like a charm…

Today, once again, I was very delighted with my MacBook Pro. Because I use this laptop professionally I have data on there that belongs to my clients. Since I take the data with me I better encrypt it. Until now I used a default feature called FileFault that encrypts your whole home-directory. That is not really what I want but I could live with that until I started using TimeMachine (Apple’s great backup solution that allows you to easily recover old data). Mutations on your FileVaulted home directory are only stored when you log out and not every hour like other data on your system.

So I went looking for other solutions. In Linux I was able to create crypted filesystems and mount them anywhere I wanted. So I started searching on the internet for a similar solution for OS X. I shouldn’t have searched that far from home since this functionality is right here, in OS X itself. The Disk Utility program offers everything I was looking for.

It was a long and hard struggle in the new high-definition digital versatile disc arena. Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray were fighting for adoption. Now the fight has ended, the dust settles and Blu-Ray comes out as the winner. Toshiba is going to give up on its HD-DVD format. Now that the battle is over the consumers can finally buy a product without having to worry about buying the wrong format. You can expect prices to drop as well in the near future.

How is this going to influence the console market? Sony’s playstation 3 comes with a built-in Blu-Ray device. Microsofts XBOX 360 comes without any HD player but an optional HD-DVD is available. Since Sony’s Playstation 3 is the cheapest Blu-Ray player available will the market shift towards PS3 instead of XBOX 360? Many people already bought a Playstation 3 and only use it as a Blu-Ray player. Let’s wait and see… this could get interesting. Will the bad choice for HD-DVD force Microsoft to drop the price on their console?
