Ik ben al jaren op zoek naar een effectief middel tegen verschijnselen van verkoudheid. ‘S ochtends opstaan met verstopte luchtwegen is geen pretje. Ik heb van alles geprobeerd: zalfjes, pillen, creme’s, dragees, inhalers, druppels, sniffers, snuivers, poeders, tabletten in doordrukstrips, niets hielp echt. Maar nu is er eindelijk een middel dat gewoon echt je verstopte neus verhelpt. Niet door met eucalyptus de suggestie te werken dat alles open staat. Nee, het werkt gewoon echt. Je moet het wel even oplossen in heet water maar dan ben je in één klap van je verstopte neus af. Gezondheid!

Frapant is dat de Engelse bijsluiter juist waarschuwt tegen het oplossen in warm water terwijl in de Nederlandse bijsluiter juist wordt geadviseerd om het wèl in heet water op te lossen.

Je zou het haast vergeten maar dankzij Google wordt je met de neus op de keiharde feiten gedrukt. Vandaag is het Koninginnedag. De koningin zit in Friesland en de Friezen trekken massaal naar Amsterdam om daar de rol van onaangepaste provinciaal te vervullen. Vrolijke kinderen verkopen op rafelige dekentjes het afgedankte speelgoed op de vrijmarkt. Achterbakse ouders staan daar ook en verkopen de kleding die ze het afgelopen jaar van de voedselbank hebben gekregen. Hebberige zelfstandigen bereiden hotdogs en hamburgers met de toepasselijke naam “salmonella speciaal”. Fijne Koninginnedag!

Google heeft dit jaar een nieuw logo ter gelegenheid van Koninginnedag gemaakt voor de Nederlandse google website. Ook in 2005 en 2003 heeft google speciale Koninginnedag logo’s gemaakt.

Now here’s some remarkable news. I mean, you did expect it but you just never heard any evidence on it. But when you read this article on a USB device that Microsoft offers to law-enforcement agencies you might consider changing operating system. The COFEE, which stands for Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor has 150 commands that should reduce the time to gather forensic evidence. It can decrypt passwords and analyze a computer’s Internet activity. Brad Smith from Microsoft demonstrated the COFEE to 350 law-enforcement experts last monday.

Now you may feel a little awkward that anyone who ownes a COFEE can extracts forensic data from your (running) windows system but please keep in mind that there is a very legitimate reason for this kind of technology. You see “it’s for the children”. As Brad Smith (Microsoft) puts it: “Criminals seek to win a child’s confidence in cyberspace and meet in real space.” Everytime someone uses the “it’s for the children” argument you better keep an eye on them.

The jurors have spoken and found Hans Reiser guilty of first degree murder. Hans Reiser could not give believable explanations for his suspicious behaviour after his wife “disappeared”. Hans faces 25 to live.

Microsoft presented Windows Vista as the most secure Windows ever. It is, by far, the most annoying Windows version ever. It has a security measure called UAC (User Account Control) in which programs run under a restricted user (not new, Unix anyone?). When an application wants to do something that requires a higher privilege-level UAC will show a pop-up in which the user has to agree on the raised privileges. The result of this is a constant, non-stop, bombardment of pop-up windows bothering the user constantly with “security” questions. It feels secure. You think you are in control. Now read this. These guys created a program that lets you reboot Vista without UAC kicking in even once. The trick? Let part of your program run as a service which has “System Administrator” privileges.

Windows Vista is not more secure than windows XP is. All Vista users can now deactivate UAC since it is a hoax anyway. Cancel or Allow?

update: It seems Windows 2000 is the more secure Windows version. At least it requires a password of 18770 characters and cannot repeat any of your previous 30689 passwords.

There’s a new version of VMware Fusion for your Mac released. Version 1.1.2 (87978). I have a license for verion 1.1.1 and the updater accepted that license and installed version 1.1.2 under the same license. So updating is free. There are some issues resolved. One of the issues was a bug that prevented running virtual machines being backed up using TimeMachine. This was fixed in Mac OS X 10.5.2 and TimeMachine backups are now enabled in VMware Fusion. Update now!

Als u net zo veel interesse in het koningshuis heeft als ik dan help ik u een handje: W.A. is omtrokken met een scherpe gele cirkel, de vage -uitgegumde- gele cirkels vergeeft u mij.

I heard Snoop Dog appeared on stage during a Willie Nelson concert on the 21th april 2008 in Amsterdam. Now there is some footage out that shows this. I think this is rather remarkable. This is a country and western song, not your regular Snoop Doggy-style.

Gisteren schoof ik aan bij een lunch-overleg. De projectmanager had geweldige broodjes besteld (onder andere met lekkere carpaccio). Er was een kan verse melk, een kan jus d’orange, wat wil je nog meer? Niets! Daar dacht de cateraar anders over. Geheel op eigen initiatief besloot deze daar een aantal zakjes ‘vegetable crisps’ bij te doen. De aantrekkelijke verpakking en de daarop staande beschrijving “delicious to the core” (nee, ik verzin het niet) prikkelen de nieuwsgierigheid. Het is een soort chips maar niet van dunne aardappelschijfjes maar van schijfjes wortel (carrot), bietjes (beets) en rapen (turnip). De chips hebben aantrekkelijke kleuren: licht, oranje en diep rood. Het ziet er niet slecht uit maar als kind leer je al snel dat alles wat “groente” heet eigenlijk niet geschikt is om door het menselijk verteringskanaal verwerkt te worden en dan met name niet door het eerste deel daarvan: de mond. De smerige smaak teistert de smaakpapillen en verandert het humeur van ieder kind van zonneschijn in een donderende tornado die ieder moment de grond kan raken.

Now this is a remarkable piece of technology. Ksplice allows you to patch a running Linux kernel without the need to reboot your system. Of course there are restrictions. The patch should not introduce semantic changes to kernel datastructures. Now this is not really a restriction since most security patches won’t change the kernel datastructures and this technique is typically used to apply security patches to running systems. ZDnet also reports on Ksplice.

When I have the time I will definitely play around with this software.

Now this struck me as a joke however this is dead serious. A German publishing company (Random House, part of the Bertelsmann group) is going to print & release the German Wikipedia on paper. Who in their right minds would want a fully cross-indexed, clickable online encyclopedia on dead paper?

I really feel this is a step in the wrong direction. We have to move away from publishing and printing on paper anyway. I do realize that a lot of people still prefer paper version of documents and books but an encyclopedia is all about references and links. Just click and you’re there!

Oh this is cool in a geeky kind of way. I’m not the marrying kind however I could be suckered into marriage by a set of these rings. Oh the lucky bastard. This guy went to a flea market and came across roms for the old Colecovision console as the label read ” Cabbage Patch Kids’ Day in the Park” which was only released on Coleco, and a very poor game by the way. At home he took a close look at all the eproms and noticed some labels mentioning “CPKPark Atari 2600″. An amazing find. The 2600 rendition of the game is never seen by anyone other than its creator Ed English as described here.

Now he only needs someone who can help dump these eproms. Great story! The Atari 2600 scene is very much alive these days so hopefully we will get some screenshots soon
