De actiegroep “Wij vertrouwen stemcomputers niet“, een initiatief van o.a. Rop Gonggrijp, heeft haar doel bereikt. Voorlopig worden in Nederland geen stemcomputers gebruikt. Het stemmen gaat weer ouderwets met pen en papier. Dat maakte het Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken vrijdag bekend. De stemmachines van fabrikant Nedap bleken onveilig.

Men heeft succesvol de software reverse engineered en aangepast. Daarnaast zenden de machines signalen uit waarmee afgeluisterd kan worden wat iemand gestemd heeft. Eindelijk eens een goed besluit uit Den Haag.

Gregorius maakt gebruik van zijn vrijheid van meningsuiting. Gregorius is niet meer. Gregorius is tot zwijgen gebracht. Censuur heeft hem van dichtbij neergeschoten. Een nekschot was het. Het lichaam viel voorover, z’n gezicht zijdelings op de natte aarde. Dat zal ‘m leren! Acht plaatjes tekenen waar sommige mensen boos van worden kàn niet! Màg niet! Nederland kàn zoveel beter.

Volgens Hirsh Ballin zijn er zes à zeven aangiftes gedaan tegen Gregorius Nekschot wegens opzettelijke belediging van een bevolkingsgroep en aanzetten tot haat. Anderhalve dag heeft Gregorius Nekschot vastgezeten. Waarvoor? De gewraakte cartoons -zijnde het feitelijke bewijsmateriaal- waren allang veiliggesteld. Op basis van dat materiaal kan een rechter beslissen òf en wèlke straf uitgedeeld dient te worden, niet de politie. De enige reden voor opsluiting is intimidatie. De overheid intimideert verdachten… Waar zou het Guantanamo Bay van Nederland komen te liggen? Pampus? Of hebben we het oppervlak van Texel nodig?

Asjemenou?! Wim de Bie onderhoudt al meer dan zes jaar een blog voor de VPRO (Bieslog) maar daar lijkt gisteren een einde aan gekomen te zijn (voorlopig althans). Wim vindt dat het tijd is voor vernieuwing en daar gaat hij de komende maanden hard over nadenken. Als hij nieuwe inspiratie vindt dan komt hij terug en anders…

Anders moeten we afscheid nemen van een geweldig blog met goed geschreven artikelen en verhalen. Dus ik hoop van harte dat Wim de Bie terugkeert met of zonder nieuwe ideeën. Van mij mag Bieslog nog jaren doorgaan in de huidige opzet. Wim bedankt en succes met het vinden van nieuwe ideeën en of inspiratie. Ik heb genoten.

Kijk dat zijn cijfers waar we wat aan hebben: de overheid gaf in 2007 maar liefst €650.000.000 uit aan “externe adviseurs”. Het beeld van incompetente bestuurders dringt zich langzaam maar zeker op. Aan de ene kant staat de inhoudelijk adviseur in te fluisteren wàt ze moeten zeggen en aan de andere kant staat de media-adviseur in te fluisteren hòe ze het moeten zeggen. Wat is dan precies de toegevoegde waarde van die “middle-man (m/v)”? Stof tot nadenken.

Vandaag werd bekend gemaakt dat als het rekeningrijden wordt ingevoerd dat dan de BPM daadwerkelijk wordt afgeschaft. Nog niet zo lang geleden moest Camiel Eurlings op zijn schreden terugkeren en melden dat de BPM toch niet afgeschaft gaat worden. Dit in tegenstelling tot eerdere beloften. Vandaag leren we dat Eurlings toch woord houdt.

Ik zat er weer eens mooi naast toen ik schreef over de BPM als melkoe. Ik voorspelde dat de BPM gehandhaafd zou blijven desondanks de eerdere beloften van de overheid. En die boude voorspelling wordt nu keihard geloochenstraft. De BPM wordt wel afgeschaft! En volledig afgeschaft! En, oh ja, er komt een belastingkje voor in de plaats die we CO₂-belasting noemen. Maar laat ik nooit meer iemand horen zeggen dat Eurlings zijn woord niet is nagekomen. De BPM verdwijnt en het vertrouwen in de overheid en politiek is in één keer volledig hersteld. En nu: HUP! Aan de slag! Die nieuwe auto komt niet voor niets!

CNN has some shocking footage from Burma. Please call it Burma and not Myanmar because the name Mynamar was imposed by the military regime. By adopting the name Myanmar you recognize the military regime of Burma. Something we should not do if you ask me.

Anyway here you can see very explicit images of the disaster that happened in Burma. You just can’t believe the military regime is not allowing foreign aidworkers into the country…

I don’t like Microsoft. True: without windows the peneratation of the personal computer would not have been as high as now. So also the widespread use of internet would not have been possible without Microsoft. Albeit I really have a problem with the way Microsoft does business. The latest scandal is that MSN and live messenger now block URL’s with YouTube links in them. So you can’t send any funny YouTube video’s to your friends who are using MSN of Windows live messenger.

This kind of practices really make me sick. I hope this will backfire on Microsoft in ways they can’t imagine.

Here’s a remarkable report on a bug that has been living in BSD for over 25 years. At one time, BSD-hero, Kirk McKusick implemented the dir* library in BSD to prevent applications from having to implement the directory oriented functions themselves. Afterwards he changed 22 programs that were using direct directory handling to using the operating system functions. The bug could prolong itself for 25 years because it manifests itself in a particular (rare) case:

This code will not work as expected when seeking to the second entry of a block where the first has been deleted: seekdir() calls readdir() which happily skips the first entry (it has inode set to zero), and advance to the second entry. When the user now calls readdir() to read the directory entry to which he just seekdir()ed, he does not get the second entry but the third.

Even OSX has the same problem since it has BSD under the hood. The good news is that BSD now even got better and a small consolation for all coders out there: even Kirk McKusick slips one in every now and then. Happy coding.

Did you wonder why the linux support of your graphics card from ATI or Nvidia is so crappy? Why don’t they just open source the driver? Now we know: here’s a link that shows you how to upgrade your consumer Nvidia GeForce videocard into a (way more expensive) Nvidia Quadro card. Of course you are not instructed to solder extra GPU’s on your videocard, this is a software modification. It allows you to use the premium drivers intended for the Quadro series on your GeForce. So the hardware is very similar but you pay around $1000 extra for the driver to make the card faster in professional 3D software.

So know you know why there never will be high quality open-source drivers for your graphics card: the manufacturers want to rip you.

Het concept rekeningrijden wordt al decennia lang, bij tijd en wijle, als proefballon opgelaten. De proefbalon werd dan even zo vlug neergeschoten door belangenorganisaties van vervoerders en automobilisten. De bewering dat rekeningrijden voor minder files gaat zorgen is niet onbetwist. Volgens de overheid staan er veel mensen voor hun plezier in de file. Als ik in de file om me heen kijk zie ik geen vrolijke gezichten noch mensen die plezier hebben. Ik ben dus geneigd te beweren dat mensen die in de file staan dat doen omdat ze moeten.

So far I ignored Rickrolling, you know the phenomenon, instead of watching something you expect you suddenly see Rick Astley appear with his “never gonna give you up” shit-tune. Most of the Rickrolling that is going on is not funny since they just link to the music video on YouTube. I don’t consider that to be funny. Today my buddy Emiel showed me that Rickrolls can be cool. Here is an excellent example. It’s a mod for doom. Rickroll me once, shame on you, Rickroll me twice shame on me. In this case I Rickrolled myself to death.
