StarCraft on OS X: Old love never dies
It was years ago when friends (co-workers) got me hooked on StarCraft. On Saturdays we met at someone’s place to play StarCraft. Many hours of fun trying to wipe each other of the map, literally. StarCraft is all about building your army, defending your base and trying to wreak havoc on someone else’s base. All in all nothing but good memories. Well except for the fact that we had to wait for hours on Patrick to get his system up and running… sigh…
Blizzard supplies a PC version as well as a Mac version on the CDs. On one of the Game-a-lot meetings Randolf showed up with a Mac notebook (OS 9) running StarCraft. So I thought let’s try to install StarCraft on my MacBook Pro on Mac OS X. On the Blizzard support site I found a native OS X installer so you don’t have to cope with the Mac OS 9 backwards compatibility issues. So I downloaded the installer and started it. It allowed me to install StarCraft as well as the expansion pack Brood War from the original CDs. Worked like a charm…
I downloaded the latest patch (1.15.2) from Blizzard and that removes an old annoyance from the game: you have to have the original CD in the drive in order to play. With patch 1.15.2 this requirement is dropped.
- If you own only StarCraft, copy “StarCraft Archive” from the StarCraft CD to your StarCraft folder.
- If you own StarCraft: Brood War, copy “Brood War Archive” from the StarCraft: Brood War CD to your StarCraft folder.
After patching I started the game and immediately loved it like I used to. I played a couple of games and have to conclude that I still suck at it. I can only play one race: Terran.

I’m training to get better. I have to be in shape when StarCraft 2 is released. That is really something I’m looking forward to. If I only had the time. I might have to drop World of Warcraft when StarCraft 2 arrives. Take a look at the screenshot below how absolutely beautiful the new version is going to be. You can download gameplay videos. It is really amazing stuff.

Ooooh, that brings back some fond memories. If I search really hard, I think I can still find a recording of some of those games tucked away on an external disk somewhere….
Lets hope Patrick has a new system by now….

That would be great! We already discussed the legendary attack consisting of a single SCV trespassing someone’s base. There the SCV single-handedly started deconstructing enemy buildings bolt by bolt…
I would kill to see that replay again. It was silly…

Hi Eddie,
first time visiting your blog.
Be aware I’ve gain much more experience in losing online starcraft games.
Sometime ago I’ve played several matches with friends over hamachi (vpn).
How about a match sometime?
