3D display on iPhone with headtracking

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

Oh whow this is really nice… The iPhone uses its front-facing camera to track the head of the viewer. Since it knows where the head of the viewer is it can actually simulate a 3D display as can be seen in the video below… is that a cool piece of software or what?

RIP Benoît Mandelbrot 16-oct-2010

Monday, October 18th, 2010

Last thursday the 16th of october 2010 the legendary mathematician Benoît Mandelbrot has passed away. Benoit Mandelbrot is the father of fractal geometry and is known for the beautiful Mandelbrot-set fractals. I remember the days where it took countless hours of rendering time to produce an image of the Mandelbrot-fractal on a 10 Mhz 80286 cpu… was good fun and very educational as well. Salut Benoît, thanks for your knowledge and insights…

Some nice fractal images and movies can be found here.

R.I.P. Bobby Hebb

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

Another one bites the dust… the old generation is dying. Yesterday singer/songwriter Bobby Hebb passed away at the age of 72. You may know Bobby Hebb from his excellent song “Sunny” or one of the bazillion covers of that song. Ofcourse he wrote many good songs but people tend to remember the one big hit.

Pigeon: Impossible

Monday, January 25th, 2010

I got a mail today from Jeroen pointing me to the “Pigeon: Impossible” short animation movie (thank you for that Jeroen). It is very funny. This is the first movie by writer/director Lucas Martell. He figured pixar is putting out a 90 minute movie every year. So a 6 minute short would take him… about… 3 months. Well 5 years later (May 7th 2009) it was finished. Job well done. Enjoy the movie. If you like it also check the podcasts. It gives you a little peek behind the scenes.  Very amusing and interesting.

Mandelbulb 3D… whow!

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Oh now… as a fractal lover (especially the Mandelbrot set) I was amazed at the 3D extension of the mandelbrot set which they dubbed the Mandelbulb. Here you can find detailed information on the set. But maybe you don’t care for formula’s… you just want the images? I have to sink my teeth into this puppy for  a while before I fully understand how this is created. Meanwhile here’s a nice video of the mandelbulb. Fractal dimensions now in 3D… what a day…

50 years Asterix & Obelix

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Today 50 years ago (29 oct 1959) Asterix & Obelix was first published in the magazine Pilote. Since then many comics have been published. Read more on the history of Asterix & Obelix on wikipedia. Google commemorates this with a special logo on their page:

Unfortunately it’s not on the Dutch page but it is at least on the French, Belgium, German, Norwegian & Swedish pages of Google.

Accordion kid

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Oooh nee toch.. “accordion”…. denk je bij accordionmuziek ook aan geforceerd lachend vrolijk meezwierende pippo’s die oubollige deuntjes staan te trekken? Moet je dit eens zien… nee echt…
Vivaldi – de vier jaargetijden – zomer…. op een accordion…. kick ass kid!

Weird tattoo

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

I just saw this picture on digg. The title is “The most ironic tattoo you will ever see“. Well ironic may not be the right word but it’s kind a weird, isn’t it? Look at the nose of the shark. It really is a great tattoo, a piece of art. I really don’t know if a shark really bit off his arm or that he forgot to read the manual of the toaster. Really funny comments can be found in the reactions on the digg page.

Wall painted animation

Graffiti is bad!, mmmm’kay? But here’s an amazing video of animated graffiti. Paint it. Frame it. Wipe parts. Paint again. Frame by frame. Amazing stuff…

More photos taken at the right angle

Sunday, March 15th, 2009

A while ago I had a small post about photography by Matt Stuart. His pictures are funny because they are taken at the right angle. On digg i found another post that has 100 photos taken at the right angle… Here’s one sample image.

Stef Bos in de Purmaryn, 13-03-2009

Saturday, March 14th, 2009

Apple mod: replace logo with lcd screen

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Now this has to be the ultimate mod for a macbook. EdsJunk cracked his MacBook open and added a second monitor to it. So instead of the dull backlit apple logo you can now display anything on it. Here’s a video of the result… oh boy…
