SCO is scoing down…

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Mayday… Mayday… the vehicle that tried to spread FUD (fear, uncertainty & doubt) in the open unix community is going down… The demise of SCO is neigh… Many times investors have tried to keep the warship afloat but this time it’s going down for good.
Groklaw has a nice article on it… Chapter 7 may be the last chapter of SCO.

SCO will not be missed…

Apple mod: replace logo with lcd screen

Friday, March 13th, 2009

Now this has to be the ultimate mod for a macbook. EdsJunk cracked his MacBook open and added a second monitor to it. So instead of the dull backlit apple logo you can now display anything on it. Here’s a video of the result… oh boy…

Don’t pity incompetence…

Friday, March 13th, 2009

I was digging digg and found this offbeat picture of a guy sitting amidst a web of wires using some paper documentation to figure out what is connected to what. Well if the wiring in your datacenter looks like this you can be sure that the chances of the documentation being accurate are neigh.

Aren't you glad you don't work in IT? No! I'm just glad I don't work here

Anyway the caption on the image on digg was “Aren’t you glad you don’t work in IT” as if we need to feel pity for this guy or any other IT guy. Well the wiring in this picture is a clear demonstration of incompetence (not perse by the guy in the image). Don’t pity them, educate them. I’ve done my rounds in datacenters and I’ve seen many examples of wiring gone haywire. I don’t take pictures at client sites to respect the confidentiality agreements but I found some great examples on the web of proper wiring and many examples of even worse wiring than depicted above. See below.

The future of creativity

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

This seems to be the future of creativity. Kutiman used multiple YouTube video’s of people playing instruments to create a beautiful mix. This is really amazing…

A nice article on this video can be found here. More video’s can be found on Kutiman’s page.

Schat ik kom wat later!

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

Crayon physics deluxe

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

There are not many original new games nowadays. Most of the games are 1st person shooters that are mere evolutions of previous titles. Think of the Halo’s, the Grand theft auto series. There’s nothing wrong with that. Every now and then a new original game pops up that stands out against the mainstream titles. What do you think of the just released Crayon Physics Deluxe?

You’ll have to use your creativity and your knowledge of physics to roll a ball from one spot to another spot (marked with a star). No fancy graphics, no difficult pixel shader tricks… just pure fun. This looks like hours of fun. The only drawback is that you need to run Microsoft Windows for this game or an apple iPhone. Take a look at the demonstration video below. Like what you see? There’s more on YouTube.

The return of the home computer

Friday, January 9th, 2009

It seems the ‘home computer’ of the old days is making a comeback. Asus is pushing its EEE line of small embedded computers. After the EEE netbook they also released an EEE desktop computer. The new product in line is an EEE media player, presented at CES 2009. A computer integrated into a keyboard (like the homecomputers of way back when) but this model also features a small display.

Here’s a nice preview of the product.

MS Windows 7 sneak preview

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Microsoft announced that it has already started working on “Windows 7″ as a successor to the less than satisfying Windows Vista. Microsoft promises a whole new desktop experience albeit based on the same kernel as Vista’s.

The first screenshots from Windows 7 start to appear on the net. Mac OS X users will recognize a whole lot of OS X in the Windows 7 screenshots. It is almost as if Microsoft is admitting that OS X offers a way better user experience than windows since Windows 7 seems to copy every single feature from OS X. Take a look at the screenshots. I still prefer running a Unix operating system but for those who prefer inferior OS technology this might give ‘m at least a decent user experience. I don’t think Windows 7 will be the actual name of the retail product. They should give it a name that is more up to par with copying OS X. Apple uses names like Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Leopard. So I think Windows 7 should be called “Windows Siamese twin cat” or just “Windows Copycat”.

Turbo Flying Machine & Halloween

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Some news from Azeroth (World of Warcraft). Creamfudge got his fast flying mount last saturday. When the server was back up Creamfudge saved up around 5200 gold before setting of on his last trip in the slow flying mount to the riding trainer in Shadowmoon Valley. Here’s an image of the Turbo Charged Flying Machine including the dancing Hula Girl Doll on the dashboard (one of the materials needed to craft such a machine). The Hula Girl Doll is mounted on a spring and moves and bops around as you fly. Rumor has it that the contra-movement of the bouncing Hula Doll keeps the Flying Machine stable while flying top-speed.

What’s in a name?

Saturday, October 18th, 2008

I play World of Warcraft on the Bloodhoof realm. My brave warrior, called Creamfudge, is saving up 5000 gold (which is really a lot) to learn the artisan riding skill. This will allow Creamfudge to use his helicopter at full speed. So today I was grinding gold when all of a sudden a message appeared that the server would be restarted. Unfortunately the server did not just reboot but stayed down. This status message appeared when trying to logon:

The Bloodhoof server is one of the realms of the Blackout Battlegroup. What’s in a name? Calling the Battlegroup ‘blackout’ is asking for trouble… like…  eeeehhh… blackouts… sigh…

Need… to… grind… gold…  I’m almost there. I have 4900 gold. Just another 100 gold…

Tekst in een plaatje, ik haat je…

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Corrupt HFS+ catalog file

Friday, October 17th, 2008

I’m very happy with my Mac, no doubt about it, but like in any computer system things can go wrong. In this case something was wrong with my primary filesystem (root filesystem). Whenever I rebooted (and you don’t have to do that often with a Mac) I got ‘recovered files’ in my trashcan. These were typical small files (like 8k) so this led me to believe that diskblocks were not properly allocated to files. Although I make backups regularly (Time-Machine works great) I don’t want to run my system with an inconsistent filesystem.

Fortunately OS X comes with a tool called ‘Disk Utility’. I started the Disk Utility and did a ‘verify disk’. The check fails when inspecting the catalog file. This may be due to the fact the filesystem is currently mounted since the corrupt filesystem is the root filesystem. I better boot OS X from DVD and retry the disk check. Booting from the OS X install DVD starts the installer that has a menu entry ‘Utilities’ where you can find the ‘Disk Utility’.

Update: you always find the best information after you’re done: hfsdebug.

Apple’s nieuwe MacBook Pro opengemaakt

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

Er zijn altijd mensen die, als ze iets nieuws hebben, willen weten hoe het in elkaar zit. Dus ook met de nieuwe MacBook’s van Apple. In deze prachtige reportage wordt de hele laptop uit elkaar geschroefd. Let vooral eens op dat über-sexy moederbord, custom engineering for the world!
