On one side I really feel that a government should not have secrets. We (the people) elect the government and we (the people) have a right to know what they are doing in our name. On the other hand… always showing your hand will probably have a negative impact on your position… It comes down to trust. Can you trust the people in power? History have has shown you can not.

Well we’ve all been in a situation where the location you work at allows restricted access to the internet. To an IT-guy restricting access to the internet is like squeezing his throat. We can’t breath without unrestricted access to the internet…
Now I do understand you don’t want to grant any employee unrestricted access to the internet from the corporate network. At least half of them will double-click (execute) files called ‘clickme.exe‘ or ‘funny-picture-of-your-mom.exe‘. So here’s a nice trick to get yourself a little more freedom (and privacy) in the office. I will not explain all details. You already need to understand how to tunnel your SSH through the corporate proxy. If you don’t: you are out of luck… and probably someone who would click on ‘unreleased-justin-bieber-song.bat‘ anyway.
This is Google’s motto “Don’t be evil” however more and more it seems to be applicable to you and not to Google. The latest news is that the Street-view vehicles are also registering WLAN’s and MAC addresses while mapping your neighbourhood. Big issue in Germany (here’s a German article from newspaper ‘Der Spiegel’) where this was discovered.
Now the most appalling and worrying is that Google CEO Eric Schmidt recently said internet users shouldn’t worry about privacy unless they have something to hide. Right. “Don’t be evil” also includes to not collect data that could facilitate any evil.
Oh wow.. many people I’ve spoken about the Oracle/Sun merger didn’t like the idea but also at former Sun not everyone seems to be happy about it. As always with mergers like these the most gifted and talented people are the first ones to leave. Those who actually matter don’t have to put up with management crap. Just pack up your ol’ bags and throw ‘m down at some other company who is delighted with your arrival.
So the latest rumours are now confirmed: James Gosling (father of the programming language Java) is bailing ship… who will be next? Who will stay behind? What will the impact be on Sun’s former assets like Java, Solaris and MySQL?
Oracle has already taken another approach with many of the assets they got from Sun. Former Sun Solaris, now called Oracle Solaris, used to be free (as in free beer) but Oracle Solaris has a 90-day trail period. After the trail period you’ll have to obtain a license from Oracle. Sure, you can still use OpenSolaris but unfortunately all (or most) future development to Oracle Solaris is closed source so these features and fixes will not end up in Open Solaris.
Yup once again the adoption of open standards by the EU has come under attack according to this article on Slashdot. They accuse Kroes of trying to get the open standards and open source off the agenda. Kind of weird isn’t it? She has been European Commissioner for Competition… go figure.

The patent system is misused to restrain competition for the economical benefit of a few but fails to promote innovation. A software market environment is better off with no patents on software at all. Healthy competition forces market players to innovate.
The patent system should not be misused -which is happening- to control competition for the economical benefit of a few, but should promote innovation. In the case of software, more innovation and a healthy independent SME economy means no patents on software at all. European court decisions still accept in many cases the validity of the software patents granted by national patent offices and the European Patent Office (EPO) that is beyond democratic control. They not only continue to grant them, but also to lobby in favor of them. Despite the current deep crisis of the patent system, they are unable to reform and put at risk too many European businesses with their soft granting policy.

Aan het tumult in de media te zien is de impact van de AIVD razzia hard aangekomen in het neerlands journalistieke wereldje. Niet in de laatste plaats omdat de journalistiek nu zelf geraakt wordt. Na de inval bij Gregorius Nekschot was er wel wat aandacht maar lang niet zo’n felle veroordeling als bij deze inval. Dat vind ik raar want in deze zaak betreft het notabene staatsgeheimen. Louter het bezit van staatsgeheimen is al strafbaar. In het geval van Gregorius Nekschot ging het slechts om een paar cartoons.
Het is inmiddels wel duidelijk dat de vrijheden van het individu en van de pers in ernstige mate beperkt wordt. De rol van een onafhankelijk journalist is waarheidsvinding en publicatie van die waarheid. In die zin is een journalist slechts een medium. Een medium dat zelfs een bepaalde mate van bescherming geniet daar het de journalistieke bronnen geheim mag houden. In mijn optiek is de inval en de aanhouding van de journaliste niets meer dan een poging tot intimidatie en angst zaaien net zoals bij Gregorius Nekschot. De inval bij een journaliste om een lek bij de AIVD proberen te dichten is hetzelfde als de postbode verantwoordelijk houden voor het bezorgen van een dreigbrief. Maar het is makkelijker de postbode te grijpen dan de afzender. Zwaait u nog even naar uw vrijheden want ze verdwijnen sneller dan u denkt.

Wil jij ook iedere dag een paar nieuwe gratis laptops? Dan moet je bij de Amerikaanse douane gaan werken op een vliegveld. Zij mogen namelijk laptops en andere electronische apparatuur confisqueren voor onbepaalde tijd. Dus tegen de tijd dat er een nieuw modelletje voorbij komt kun je ‘m zo aanpakken van de verbijsterde reiziger. Wat zegt u? Ben je mal? Natuurlijk hoeft er niet een concrete verdenking tegen die specifieke reiziger te zijn. Gewoon aanpakken en inpikken.
Wat zou de douane nog meer mogen naast de laptop inspecteren? Mag men software installeren? Keyloggers? Andere spyware? Zijn daar überhaupt regels voor? Het is wel zeker dat er een integrale kopie van uw harde schijf gemaakt mag worden. Volgens interne richtlijnen moeten deze kopieën na bestudering vernietigd worden. Kopieën van aangetroffen identiteitsdocumenten worden wel bewaard. Ongelofelijk in hoeverre je vrijheid beperkt wordt met als doel deze “vrijheid” te beschermen. U kent het wel, het bekende “terrorisme bestrijding fabeltje”. Lees dit artikel in de Washington Post maar eens.
Hoe kun je je hier effectief tegen beschermen? Je hele harde schijf encrypten? Ben je verplicht een eventuele passphrase af te staan? En als je de encryptie sleutel nu eens echt niet kent? Ik bedoel stel dat je de (grote) key op een USB stick hebt staan? De USB stick heb je nodig om de laptop te kunnen booten. Je kunt de stick apart naar de VS transporteren (desnoods via post). Of misschien dat je de key ergens kunt downloaden als je eenmaal in de VS bent (met je telefoon ofzo). Goede ideeën zijn welkom in de comments.
I’ve posted many rants against DRM already and will continue to rant when needed. In this case Nate Anderson wrote an article which is a convincing statement against DRM. Yahoo! Music, a not very well known online music store, closes shop and will bring down the DRM keyserver as well. So all of the poor sods who bought music through Yahoo! Music will not be able to play their songs anymore. That’s DRM for you. Thanks DRM. Thanks Yahoo!
What have we learned? Don’t put your trust and money in DRM protected goods. It’s like the local car dealer goes out of business and starts taking back all delivered cars from their customers. “Sorry we’re broke. We’ll have to revoke your right to use the car that you bought. Hand over the keys. NOW!”
In de Verenigde Staten is per mei de zogenaamde Real I.D. wet in werking getreden. Dit houdt in dat iedereen die in de USA woont of werkt een federale ID-kaart moet dragen. Deze kaart heb je ook nodig als je een per vliegtuig wilt reizen of als je een bankrekening wilt openen. Het idee is dat het voor illegale immigranten moeilijker wordt om zich vrij te bewegen in the USA. Voor het aanvragen van een Real I.D. moet je een kopie van je geboortecertificaat overleggen, burgerservicenumber (social security number), inschrijving bij het bevolkingsregister en andere identificatie (paspoort, rijbewijs). Uiteraard is het argument voor deze maatregel dat dit zou bijdragen om terroristische aanslagen te voorkomen.
Feit is dat voor de Real I.D. Act een nieuwe centrale database in het leven is geroepen waar informatie over Amerikaanse bugers als naam, geboortedag, adres, geslacht, ID numbers en een digitale foto wordt opgeslagen. Sterker nog: de I.D. card is electronisch uitleesbaar en zou moeten beschikken over faciliteiten die het onmogelijk maken om de kaart te dupliceren, vervalsen of aan te passen. Zucht… wanneer leren we nu eindelijk eens.
Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation (FSF), has been known for his controversial and sometimes radical statements. So in many cases I don’t (fully) agree with Richard but in this article I like the gest of his article regarding proprietary software and the stranglehold it keeps on its users.
In the article Stallman calls copying software for neighbours a neighbourly thing to do. I feel that if the software is targeted at home users (with acceptable pricing) you should not copy the software. License a copy for a few bucks. However when software is targeted for business-use I don’t think home users should have to pay up. If I were Microsoft, only business/professional use of MS Office would require a license. Home use of MS Office would be free. Does Microsoft really believe that an eight year old who writes a letter to grandma should pay hunderds of dollars for an office license? I don’t think this is very realistic. I would like to see a business plan that projects expected revenue from eight year olds writing letters to grandma. Get out of here!

En daar mag u niets van weten. U bent namelijk een ondergeschikte die niets anders dan lege briefjes heeft in te brengen ookal denkt u daar anders over. De EU werkt namelijk op meedere niveau’s. Het eerste is een niveau waarop eigenlijk niets gebeurt en dit is het niveau dat aan de Europese burger getoond wordt. Hier komen besluiten uit in de categorie: “Brussel heeft bepaald dat het elastiek van een sok niet strakker mag zitten dan… bla bla bla”.
Hier lachen we om of we maken ons er kwaad over, maar dat is allemaal schijn-politiek uit Brussel want op een ander niveau is men in het geniep met de Amerikanen aan het onderhandelen over een juridisch verdrag dat het mogelijk moet maken om onbegrensd informatie over EU burgers uit te wisselen. We hebben het dan over afgetapte internet gegevens en gegevens over creditcard-gebruik. Ja, daar word je stil van… Da’s hele andere koek dan “Brussel heeft bepaald dat er minimaal 15% pinda’s in pindakaas moet zitten”.
Oh ja, blijft u vooral geloven dat u via het kiezen van een paar euro-parlementariërs invloed kunt uitoefenen op de EU, dat is een geruststellende gedachte. Neem bijvoorbeeld euro-parlementariër Sophie in ‘t Veld (D66). Zij zegt dit op haar weblog: “Ministers en Eurocommissarissen hebben een onverholen minachting voor het principe van democratische controle op de macht, en voelen zich niet geroepen antwoord te geven op vragen van parlementariërs”… Zo, nu hoort u eens van een ander hoe het met het gehalte van democratie gesteld is.
