Now this has to be the ultimate mod for a macbook. EdsJunk cracked his MacBook open and added a second monitor to it. So instead of the dull backlit apple logo you can now display anything on it. Here’s a video of the result… oh boy…
I was digging digg and found this offbeat picture of a guy sitting amidst a web of wires using some paper documentation to figure out what is connected to what. Well if the wiring in your datacenter looks like this you can be sure that the chances of the documentation being accurate are neigh.
Aren't you glad you don't work in IT? No! I'm just glad I don't work here
Anyway the caption on the image on digg was “Aren’t you glad you don’t work in IT” as if we need to feel pity for this guy or any other IT guy. Well the wiring in this picture is a clear demonstration of incompetence (not perse by the guy in the image). Don’t pity them, educate them. I’ve done my rounds in datacenters and I’ve seen many examples of wiring gone haywire. I don’t take pictures at client sites to respect the confidentiality agreements but I found some great examples on the web of proper wiring and many examples of even worse wiring than depicted above. See below.
Oh no… today is 03/03/09 and today is much anticipated by many obsessed math-fans. It’s Square Root Day. For those who don’t know: 3 x 3 = 9 (32=9). This so utterly useless, boring and stupid that I had to mention it. You can read all about it here… and here’s a small quote so you know you won’t miss anything by completely ignoring this topic.
“These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day — and poof — they’re gone,” said Ron Gordon, a Redwood City teacher who started a contest meant to get people excited about the event.
Yes, today is a beautiful day for all unix fans around the world. In Unix we measure time in seconds since 1 januari 1970… and today that will go beyond 1234567890. How nice. The javascript clock below is counting… don’t miss it.
Today I got a link from my good buddy Emiel about a wasp sucking machine. It turns out the inventor (Matthias Wandel) has a website with a lot of strange contraptions and weird thingies that he built. I must admit I highly admire the creativity and craftsmanship of Matthias. He reminds me a lot of Wallace (from Wallace and Gromit). Not convinced? How about his Jenga Pistol or his Binary Marble Adding Machine or how about his 1-pin dot matrix printer? Check out his website it is really great. If there is ever going to be a MacGyver award it should go to Matthias Wandel. From his creations you can see this incredibly cool guy combines craftmanship with a lot of humor. I’ll be spending a lot of time on his site.
Er zijn altijd mensen die, als ze iets nieuws hebben, willen weten hoe het in elkaar zit. Dus ook met de nieuwe MacBook’s van Apple. In deze prachtige reportage wordt de hele laptop uit elkaar geschroefd. Let vooral eens op dat über-sexy moederbord, custom engineering for the world!
Today my good buddy Emiel sent me a link to a remarkable video. You’ll see a holographic display of the Earth fed by google Earth. How cool is that? Yes, you are right: VERY COOL!! Please wait for the part where they stop rotating the Earth and start zooming in…
Oh this is cool in a geeky kind of way. I’m not the marrying kind however I could be suckered into marriage by a set of these rings. Please don’t disturb me as I’m dailing random phone numbers popping the question to every woman who answers the phone. Meanwhile you can order your set of wedding rings right here.
Alright... I'm on google+ now. Lots of stuff to discover but I'm liking it so far... 2011/07/01
