Ja het is er wel weer een zondag voor maar ik heb vandaag geen zin om weer die platenkoffers op te gaan zoeken achter de knieschotten. Maar dat wil niet zeggen dat er geen fatsoenlijke selectie te maken valt uit de CD bak. Immers heb ik daar ook een boel oude maar dierbare muziek.

Ziehier: een hele rij CD’s van J.J. Cale. De zwaar ondergewaardeerde (zeker in Nederland) gitaarvirtuoos uit Tulsa en schrijver van ongelovelijk mooie liedjes. Mijn favoriet is wel “You keep me hangin’ on” (van het album “Grasshopper”). De video is mooi maar slaat niet op het nummer. Het gaat om de muziek moet je maar denken.

Vandaag was weer zo’n heerlijke zondagochtend om weer eens een vleugje nostalgie te snuifen uit de oude platenkoffers. Er zitten nog genoeg juweeltjes tussen die ik nog niet op CD heb noch electronisch. Ik heb helaas geen platenspeler meer speelklaar staan dus ik moet het doen met de oude hoes en de herinneringen die de plaat oproept. Een eerdere speurtocht in de platenkoffer leverde al wat moois op. Deze keer trok ik er een ander juweeltje uit van een veel te vroeg overleden artiest: Jim Croce.

De video op YouTube is prachtig want je ziet Jim Croce zelf met zijn vrouw Ingrid. Het kleine mannetje in de video is zijn zoon A.J. (Adrian James) Croce, ook een gewaardeerd musicus. Dit nummer “Time in a bottle” heeft Jim geschreven voor zijn (toen) pasgeboren zoon A.J.

Wat een melancholie op de vroege zondagmorgen.. maar wat een prachtig nummer is het toch. Als je goed naar de tekst luistert dan is het echt een kippenvel nummer. Jim Croce heeft nog meer van dergelijke juweeltjes op zijn naam staan.

Sometimes something from the past pops back into your mind. This morning I remembered a beautiful song I heard through YouTube. No matter how hard I tried I couldn’t remember the name of the performing artist. A search on “beautiful song from a guy whos name I can’t remember” didn’t yield anything useful. Just as I was about to give up I remembered I put the song in a playlist or something.
After logging in to YouTube the entry was there… and the video was also still there. I played it over and over again and still love it. Especially the lines “I should have seen ‘Let’s just be friends’ coming a mile away. I think I’d rather have heard the disappointing truth” and “You’re the one who got scared and backed off when we did not fit just like a glove”…

Bono and U2 were pissed as hell. Before they had the new record (called ‘No Line On The Horizon’ for those who care) in store some songs were already leaked to the internet. Bono was stampeding with rage. “What bloody motherf*cker leaked our f*cking tunes?!!”. He called all personnel together. No one was to leave before the leak was found. And ohh boy… was that guy going to get hurt. Bono would dismember his balls for leaking the songs. Imagine all countermeasures that are taken to prevent leaks. All personnel is screened. Recordings are stored encrypted. Only Bono knows the passphrase. Who ever leaked the songs did this on purpose, so much Bono knew for sure…. And finally the source of the leak was found. Get the tweezers out… Bono will never sound the same, some people would say he sings about three tones higher.

Brad sucks! At least that is what Brad thinks but Brad actually doesn’t suck at all. But why take my word for it? Why don’t you see for yourself whether Brad sucks or doesn’t suck? “Brad sucks” is a “one man band without fans” as he calls it. In September Brad will be releasing a new CD “Out of it” which will be available as free download. I’m considering opening a PayPal account and order both CD’s. For $28 including shipping you get one great album and judging from the preview of the new album it will be great as well. You can also download the albums as FLAC (lossless) and MP3 (but you’ll have to do without the simple but charming cover art).

I’ve posted many rants against DRM already and will continue to rant when needed. In this case Nate Anderson wrote an article which is a convincing statement against DRM. Yahoo! Music, a not very well known online music store, closes shop and will bring down the DRM keyserver as well. So all of the poor sods who bought music through Yahoo! Music will not be able to play their songs anymore. That’s DRM for you. Thanks DRM. Thanks Yahoo!

What have we learned? Don’t put your trust and money in DRM protected goods. It’s like the local car dealer goes out of business and starts taking back all delivered cars from their customers. “Sorry we’re broke. We’ll have to revoke your right to use the car that you bought. Hand over the keys. NOW!”

In de rechtzaken die de MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) aanspant tegen computer- en internet- gebruikers die muziek en films op internet aanbieden komt het eigenlijk neer op één vraag: “Is aanbieden hetzelfde als verspreiden?”. Alleen het feit dat het twee verschillende woorden zijn die in andere context gebruikt worden zou je kunnen concluderen dat het verschillende begrippen zijn. Toch zijn er heel wat Amerikanen veroordeelt (of hebben geschikt) op basis van deze vermeende gelijkheid.

In de rechtzaak tegen Jammie Thomas vertelde rechter Michael Davis tegen de jury dat aanbieden van muziek te beschouwen als het verspreiden ervan. Binnen vijf minuten werd Thomas schuldig bevonden door de jury. Er kwam kritiek op de handelswijze van de rechter. Daarna heeft de rechter deskundigen gehoord over aanbieden en verspreiden. Ook de EFF (electronic frontier foundation) en de MPAA mochten haar mening geven. Vooralsnog is de MPAA de enige organisatie die beweert dat beide begrippen hetzelfde inhouden, hoe verrassend. Het zou kunnen dat de rechtzaak hierzien wordt en dat dit een precedent schept voor komende zaken. Als “aanbieden” niet hetzelfde is als “verspreiden” dan krijgt de MPAA een hele zware dobber om te bewijzen dat iemand inderdaad copyright beschermd werk “verspreid” heeft. Metallica is known for its idiotic behaviour towards their fans, fansites and the internet at large. Now they complete took it over the top. What happened? Metallica invited some music critics to listen to six tracks of their forthcoming album. No non-disclosure agreements were presented nor signed. However when the critics wrote reviews and put it on their blogs metallica management demanded to remove the review. Once again: at the preview-event no restrictions were imposed.

So Metallica doesn’t want any reviews on the internet? Well, fuck them! Here’s my little Metallica review:

Metallica is a group of sorry-assed losers who made great music when they were in it for the music. Now that they are only interested in money their music sucks. They are pathetic grumpy old people who really need to clean up their act. Metallica thinks their albums don’t sell because of downloading. I don’t know anyone who downloaded their crap. Maybe Metallica should try to make another quality album like “Master of Puppets”, that will sell. No doubt their new album will suck in ways in which something has never sucked before.. That’s what I think of Metallica. Try to take down this review assholes!

Gisteren is bekend gemaakt dat Rock ‘n’ Roll legende Bo Diddley is overleden. Zijn manier van gitaarspelen (slag) heeft grote invloed gehad op de ontwikkeling van Rock ‘n’ Roll. NIet lang geleden gaf Bo Diddley in een interview te kennen dat hij en niemand anders dan hij de grondlegger is van Rock ‘n’ Roll. Niet Chuck Berry, niet Little Richard, niet Little Richard of Jerry Lee Lewis. Niemand die het echt weet. Hoe dan ook. Een groot artiest is heen gegaan. Bo Diddley is 79 jaar geworden.

Once again a great video on YouTube. The video contains amateur footage shot by Rosalind Stevenson who was a friend of Lou Reed. It shows Lou Reed, Moe Tucker and John Cale writing the song “Sunday morning” for their debut album (The Velvet Underground & Nico).

Unique footage I have never seen before. Finding all this while I was just looking for the song “Sunday morning” to match the rainy Sunday morning mood. YouTube is really cool!

Soms heb je zo’n moment van onverklaarbare sentimentaliteit. Vroeger was alles beter, toch? In zo’n vlaag van verstandsverbijstering ging ik weer eens door mijn LP collectie, althans dat gedeelte dat niet hermetisch afgesloten is van de buitenwereld achter knieschotten en dat soort verstopplaatsen.

In de loop der tijd heb ik de meeste LP’s vervangen door exemplaren op CD. U weet wel, in die tijd dat platenmaatschappijen nog niet klaagden en dankbaar de consument een tweede keer rechten liet betalen voor dezelfde muziek omdat die toevallig op een ander medium stond. Maar lang niet alle LPs zijn vervangen en vandaag kwam ik er zo een tegen. Een volledig kapot gedraaide plaat van Amos Milburn die ik vermoedelijk, ik was amper 8 denk ik, van mijn vader heb gekregen. Ik heb geen platenspeler meer aangesloten staan dus de plaat opzetten was geen optie. Dan maar naar YouTube, stelt nooit teleur: Amos Milburn. Wacht maar tot hij echt piano gaat spelen (bij 02:16 ongeveer).
