Soms heb je wel eens dat je iets opmerkt dat voor je gevoel niet klopt maar je kunt het niet onmiddellijk verklaren…. In dit geval was me eens opgevallen dat de gemiddelde snelheid van een autorit zo laag uitviel terwijl ik toch iemand ben die, eufemistisch verwoord om justitiële narigheid te vermijden, van “stevig doorrijden” houdt.

De boordcomputer van mijn auto kan per rit bijhouden wat de gemiddelde snelheid is en op een dagelijkse woon-werk rit haal ik dan ongeveer tussen de 80 en 86 km/uur gemiddeld. Dat zou betekenen dat ik door vrachtwagens van de weg gedrukt zou moeten worden wat niet het geval is. Mijn snelheidsmeter is niet danig onnauwkeurig dat daarmee de lage gemiddelde snelheid verklaard kan worden, dat heb ik middels GPS aardig kunnen bepalen. Maar waarom is het gemiddelde dan wel zo laag?…

Vandaag is een heugelijke dag, op de dag af 10 jaar bij mijn werkgever.

PROOST!

Het was klokslag 00:00 op 1 januari 2008 toen de nieuwjaars horoscoop online kwam op dit weblog. Bedoeld als tegenwicht tegen al die ‘het wordt weer een geweldig jaar’ onzin voorspelt deze horoscoop louter rampspoed en tegenslag. Verfrissend. Inmiddels hebben 798 dolende zielen, via google, de weg naar de horoscoop gevonden. En dat gaat maar door, zelfs vandaag komen nietsvermoedende mensen uit op de doomsday horoscoop. Ik heb me vaak afgevraagd hoe deze horoscoop jagers reageren op de onheilstijding. Lachen ze erom? Halen ze hun schouders op? Worden ze boos? Misschien verdrietig? Je weet het niet. Niemand, buiten de vaste lezerskring, nam de moeite om een reactie te plaatsen wat me doet vermoeden dat mensen hun schouders ophalen bij het lezen van de horoscoop en vrolijk verder gaan. Dat geeft aan dat ze deze horoscoop niet serieus nemen, lijkt me goed, en waarschijnlijk iedere andere horoscoop ook niet. Maar je weet het niet want men plaatst geen reacties… tot vannacht 03:30. Twee deernen, Bianca en Laura, in het holst van de nacht op zoek naar een opbeurend woord en een steuntje in de rug komen via google op de horoscoop. In plaats van troost vinden ze daar angstaanjagende voorspellingen die héél serieus genomen worden.

Record companies are in dire straits, record sales have dropped to an all-time low. In their struggle to survive the record companies put the blame on ‘illegal music downloads’ on the internet. In an attempt to stop online music sharing the record companies have joined forces in an organization called RIAA. The RIAA is an organization that tries to scare the shit out of people by prosecuting them for copyright violations or offer the possibility to settle out of court. Most people don’t want to go through all the legal hassle and settle. Are the record companies on the right track?

Here are some pictures from where I live. The mist (or fog, not sure) froze on the branches of trees. When the sun started to come out this morning it was a really beautiful sight. Time to get the camera out and go out to freeze my toes off. How do you like the pictures?

Still not happy about the blog theme. This is supposed to look like a semi transparent glass thingy. But apart from the visual changes the most important change is the extra wide article space.

I’m not too fond of the font yet. So expect more changes in the near future…

Friends of mine got a cute little kitten called Spikey. Isn’t he cute?

Today is the birthday of one of my musical heroes since I was a little boy of around ten. The first time I heard his music I knew: this is it. This is what music should sound like. A highly energetic, loud and fast kind of music I never heard before.

I regularly enjoyed live shows where the music had even more power and energy than the records. While the band was finishing one song Herman already started the intro of the next song on his piano.

Herman Brood was born on the 5th of november 1946. He would have been 61 today were he still alive. Not forgotten, sorely missed.

Just a quick note: I created a new theme for my blog. Unfortunately this theme is not suited for distribution since it contains graphics specific for my blog called “BloggEd!”

If you are using wordpress as well and you are interested in this theme please leave a comment. If enough people like it I will create a generalized version suitable for any wordpress blog out there. This takes some time though so I will only do this if enough people like the theme.

“I’m a backdoor man” sang Jim Morrison way back when. I would have to change that to “I’m a backend man” as a software engineer working primarily on backend computer systems.

As a backend-man I hardly get to design user interfaces or any other things that will be noticed by the users of the applications. The challenges at the backend are numerous and as such my job is very satisfying. However when friends and relatives ask what I do all day I can’t show them anything. There’s no visual evidence of my labor.

One of my friends managed to escape the backend-life to focus on design. The great thing is that every once in a while he can show some of the great things he has accomplished.

Lately he contacted me to check out his latest work of art. Stuff like this makes online shopping more fun. He created a really great Rube Goldberg machine.
