Ik heb een paar weekjes vrijaf. Even geen werk. Tijd voor zaken die er normaal bij inschieten. In de week voordat ik vrij zou krijgen heb ik snel nog een paar klassiekers aangeschaft. Sommige daarvan heb ik al gelezen maar heb ik niet in bezit. Nu wel. “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (alle 5 delen van de trilogie) van Douglas Adams, “The War of the Worlds” van H.G. Wells, “Brave New World” van Aldous Huxley (ook online te lezen) en zijn beschouwing daarop “Brave New World revisited” (ook online te lezen). Als laatste heb ik ook nog “1984” & “Animal Farm” van George Orwell aangeschaft, tijdloze klassiekers die al lang op het lijstje staan met boeken die ik eigenlijk eens zou moeten herlezen.
Leuk nieuws over George Orwell: vanaf vandaag komen zijn dagboek aantekeningen online op een blog. Precies zeventig jaar nadat de aantekeningen gemaakt zijn worden ze gepubliceerd op Orwell Diaries. Iedere dag een nieuwe entry. Vandaag de eerste waarin Orwell een slang ziet en vastpakt.
I wasn’t going to blog about this when it first made headlines but now there is a nice continuation so here’s the story. Some lunatic developer, Armin Heinrich — who calls himself an artist — has created an application for the Apple iPhone that does absolutely nothing. The application is called “I am rich” and sells for $999.99 on the iPhone App Store. The idea of the application is that you buy it to show off how rich you are. You will get an application that does nothing but it shows an icon on the application menu. That is where you show off how rich you are.
An application for snobs. I really don’t like the idea behind it and I thought nobody would be dumb enough to actually buy it. But here’s the funny part. One dude claims he bought the application by accident. He clicked on the application, has 1 click checkout enabled and is now the proud owner of an application that does nothing for $999.99.
I don’t think the application says “I am rich”… I think it says “I am stupid”… It has now been removed from App Store.
Oh dear. I messed up my apache/php5 installation and without me noticing it I have been down all night. Well who cares anyway? Hope you had a good night’s sleep. Blog is up and running again.
Gotta be more careful when relentlessly updating my system to the latest bleeding edge of software versions. Apparently there is a missing dependency between libphp5 and libltdl. So updating libtool kills libphp5.
Brad sucks! At least that is what Brad thinks but Brad actually doesn’t suck at all. But why take my word for it? Oh dear. According to the google blog they have crawled over 1.000.000.000.000 webpages. Yup more then a trillion webpages. Ain’t that something? Mind you Google doesn’t count links that lead to the same webpage so these are unique pages. Furthermore they don’t follow up on calendar links so these also don’t count in the trillion pages they crawled. Not all pages are indexed though. Some pages are too similar or contain autogenerated content and these are considered unuseful for searchers.

Dit is cool! Niet alleen vanuit technisch oogpunt zijn gedistribueerde filesystemen cool maar OFF (Owner Free Filesystem) gaat nog een stapje verder: opgeslagen data en transfers worden randomize. De data die wordt opgeslagen is dus geen kopie van het origineel. Dat betekent dus ook dat op uw “opgeslagen” mp3′tje geen copyright meer rust. Het is namelijk geen muziek meer. Het is zelfs geen MP3′tje meer. Het is totaal iets anders geworden, althans in opgeslagen vorm en tijdens transfer.
Het randomiseren werkt via algorithmen. Een simpel voorbeeld: getallen kunnen op meedere manieren samen gesteld worden. En dan hebben we het niet over de elementaire bouwstenen der getallen, de priemgetallen maar over simpele getallen. Bijvoorbeeld 12 = 2*6 maar ook 3*4 en ook 7 + 5 of 8 + 4. Je kunt “12″ dus opslaan als twee waarden 8|4 waarbij het algoritme “optellen” is. Het idee achter OFF is dat als iemand copyright heeft op de drie waarden 12,12,12 dat diegene dan niet automatisch copyright heeft op 8|4,10|2,5|7 of alle andere combinaties. Toch? Of wel? Of niet? Dat is nu de vraag. Totdat er een juridische uitspraak is kunt u gebruik maken van een groot gedistribueerd filesysteem zonder eigenaar van de data.
In de rechtzaken die de MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) aanspant tegen computer- en internet- gebruikers die muziek en films op internet aanbieden komt het eigenlijk neer op één vraag: “Is aanbieden hetzelfde als verspreiden?”. Alleen het feit dat het twee verschillende woorden zijn die in andere context gebruikt worden zou je kunnen concluderen dat het verschillende begrippen zijn. Toch zijn er heel wat Amerikanen veroordeelt (of hebben geschikt) op basis van deze vermeende gelijkheid.
In de rechtzaak tegen Jammie Thomas vertelde rechter Michael Davis tegen de jury dat aanbieden van muziek te beschouwen als het verspreiden ervan. Binnen vijf minuten werd Thomas schuldig bevonden door de jury. Er kwam kritiek op de handelswijze van de rechter. Daarna heeft de rechter deskundigen gehoord over aanbieden en verspreiden. Ook de EFF (electronic frontier foundation) en de MPAA mochten haar mening geven. Vooralsnog is de MPAA de enige organisatie die beweert dat beide begrippen hetzelfde inhouden, hoe verrassend. Het zou kunnen dat de rechtzaak hierzien wordt en dat dit een precedent schept voor komende zaken. Als “aanbieden” niet hetzelfde is als “verspreiden” dan krijgt de MPAA een hele zware dobber om te bewijzen dat iemand inderdaad copyright beschermd werk “verspreid” heeft. Lees meer op tweakers.net.
De nieuwe webbrowser van Mozilla is uit: Firefox 3! Ja, eigenlijk gisteren al… Helaas gingen de download servers zwaar onderuit. Men wilde graag het download record vestigen en daarmee in het guiness book of records komen. Het is goed te zien dat er in ieder geval weer genoeg belangstelling is voor de nieuwe versie van firefox.
Er zitten geweldige features in de nieuwe versie. De awesome bar is gewoon echt awesome. Er zit een expressie matcher achter die razendsnel relevante resultaten toont. Op de mozilla site staat een aardige video met de nieuwe features. Uiteraard zijn alle zaken die firefox al de superieure browser maakt ook aanwezig in firefox 3. Alles is weer aanpasbaar. Er zijn duizenden add-ons te downloaden waarmee de functionaliteit uitgebreid kan worden.
Willen de laatste fossielen op deze Aarde nu eindelijk overschakelen van Internet Explorer naar Firefox? Hoe eerder we die verschrikkelijke non-compliant zuig-browser van Microsoft af kunnen zinken hoe beter. Als mensen eens wisten wat ontwikkelaars allemaal moeten doen om applicaties geschikt te krijgen voor die bagger-browser uit Redmond dan was IE allang dood geweest.
Sure we all visited the google search engine to find some stuff on the internet. It’s a webapp albeit a simple one. You can type your search query and than you have to move the mouse and click shit. Next page. Next page. Click on one of the search results.
Point and click may be your thing but I’m a hardcore commandline junkie. And although I never thought of the concept of accessing a search engine through a commandline it actually works pretty well.
